Brass: The Magnet Test Is Not Enough
A magnet catches brass-plated steel. It sails straight past brass-plated zinc. Here is the full test sequence a dealer runs, in the order they run it, plus how to read age off the wear.
The short version
- Magnet pulls = brass-plated steel or iron. Fast, free, and the first test.
- But a magnet cannot catch zinc. Brass-plated zinc is non-magnetic, so it passes. Only a hidden scratch reveals it.
- Test several spots. Solid brass pieces often contain steel screws and pins that will grab a magnet on their own.
- Read the wear, not the shine. On solid brass, raised edges go brighter and recesses go darker. Plating wears through to a different metal.
- Lacquer is normal on 1950s-onward brass and it stops patina forming. A uniformly shiny old piece is usually sealed, not fake.
Why brass is harder than it looks
Brass is a copper-zinc alloy that has been worked for thousands of years, so the word “brass” on its own tells you almost nothing about age. The real work is two separate jobs: first establish that the metal is solid brass rather than a lookalike, then find the details that place the piece in a decade.
Most guides give you the magnet test and stop. The magnet test is genuinely useful and genuinely incomplete.
Test one: the magnet
Hold a decent magnet against the piece. Brass and bronze are non-magnetic; steel and iron are not. If you feel a pull, you are almost certainly holding brass-plated steel.
Two cautions. First, test several areas — a solid brass object can contain steel screws, pins or an internal rod, and a magnet will react to those in isolation without the piece being plated. Second, some bronze alloys carry slight iron impurities and can be weakly magnetic.
Test two: the hidden scratch, and the zinc problem
This is the test most people skip, and it is the one that matters. Zinc is non-magnetic, exactly like brass. So a brass-plated zinc casting sails through the magnet test looking like solid brass.
Find somewhere that does not show — the underside, inside a foot, the back of a base — and scratch through the surface. Solid brass is the same yellow-gold all the way down. If the scratch reveals white or silvery metal underneath, it is a zinc-based alloy with brass plating.
The magnet catches plated steel. Only the scratch catches plated zinc. Skipping the second test is how people buy a heavy-feeling casting that is not brass at all.
Test three: weight, colour and sound
Solid brass has real density. If a piece looks substantial and feels light, something is wrong. Tap it with a fingernail or a coin: solid brass rings rather than giving a dull thud.
On colour, brass runs warm yellow to golden. “Yellow brass” is brighter; “red brass” has more copper and reads deeper. Bronze is browner and redder. Gold plating over a base metal often looks brighter and slightly harder than natural brass.

Reading age off the wear
Once you know the metal, the surface dates it. Genuine age gives a deep, uneven, stubborn tarnish. On solid brass, raised details such as rims, edges and handles go brighter and more golden from repeated contact, while recessed areas oxidise darker brown. That differential is very hard to fake.
Plated pieces wear differently. Because the brass layer is thin, friction at edges and corners exposes the base metal, which looks patchy rather than warm.
And artificial patina gives itself away by being even. A sprayed or dipped tone sits uniformly across raised and recessed areas alike. Real oxidation never does that.
The lacquer question
What to check
- Magnet, several spots. Pull means plated steel.
- Scratch a hidden area. White or silver underneath means plated zinc.
- Heft it. Solid brass is dense for its size.
- Tap it. A ring rather than a thud.
- Look for stamps. “Solid brass” or a known maker is good. “Brass plated”, “gold plated” or “EP” for electroplated settles it the other way.
- Read the wear differential. Bright raised edges against dark recesses means solid.
- Casting seams and file marks. Hand-finishing details point to older manufacture.
- Passing the magnet test read as proof. It is one test of several. Zinc is the gap.
- Uniform “antiqued” finish. Even tone across raised and recessed areas is a sprayed patina.
- Over-polished pieces. Aggressive polishing strips the patina collectors pay for. Once it is gone it takes decades to come back.
- No mark treated as a dealbreaker. Plenty of genuine brass carries no marking at all, which is exactly why the physical tests matter.
